Ragdoll colors and patterns, what you should know:
The Ragdoll is a pointed breed, which means that the body is lighter in color than the points (points include face, tail, ears, and feet). A true, or traditional ragdoll is never solid colored, mink or sepia. A traditional ragdoll ALWAYS has blue eyes, which means aqua, green and yellow are not accepted. There are breeders who claim that cats with eye color other than blue can be true Ragdolls. These cats may hold TICA pedigrees, but they are not allowed in any TICA cat show to compete with traditional blue eyed pointed cats. Other clubs like CFA and CFF do not recognize these kittens to be ragdolls at all, therefore neither do we. Here at Blue Diamond Dolls, our goal is to breed to the Standard laid out by these registering organizations.
6 RAGDOLL COLORS:
SEAL POINT
The body color should range from ivory to pale fawn beige, shading gradually into a lighter color on the tummy or chest. The points will range from brown to a brownish black. The paw pads and nose are also seal brown.
BLUE POINT
The body color should range from bluish white to platinum grey, shading gradually to lighter color on the tummy and chest. The points will range from blue-grey to slate grey. The paw pads and nose are also dark blue grey.
CHOCOLATE POINT
The body should be ivory, shading gradually to lighter color on the tummy and chest. The points ranging from warm milk chocolate to bittersweet chocolate. I tell my parents, similar to your child’s favorite chocolate milk. The paw pads and sweet little nose should be a brownish pink as well.
LILAC POINT
The body should be white. Points are a pale, dove grey with pinkish tones to a warmer deep lavender grey color, the dilute pigment allowing the flesh tones to show through. We do not carry lilac ragdolls very often. This is a rare color for us and for many catteries.
RED POINT
Also called the flame point. The kitties body should be a warm and even creamy white tone. The points are a deep orange. Our flame points are always boys. Always. In order to have a flame or red female, the stud kitty must also be a red or flame point. Our stud kitty, Maurice, aka "Moe", only produces red boys because he is a blue point/mitted (meaning white paw).
CREAM POINT
The body should be creamy white. The points range from pale sand to deep cream. Basically, a very light red point.
RAGDOLL COLOR PATTERNS:
The Ragdoll cat is carefully bred to produce large, affectionate cats in a few patterns.
POINTED
The points are the ears, nose, face, feet and tail. On a pointed Ragdoll, these areas should be dark with well-defined color. Example: blue point, seal point, red point, lilac point … etc. Points are to be dark and contrasting to the body.
MITTED
The ragdoll will have white feet or mitts on the front feet and back.
BLAZE
Sometimes ragdolls will also have a white spot on the forehead called a blaze. It could be just a little spot of white or sometimes an hourglass shaped patch of white on their forehead, sometimes even extending to their little nose.
BI-COLOR
One of our most sought-after colors is the Bi-color pattern. The ears, face, and tail are darker in color on the ragdoll face. He or she has a darker colored inverted "V" which should be symmetrical and must not extend beyond the outer edge of the face. The chest, tummy, all 4 legs, feet and ruff should be white. The white should reach above the elbow on the front legs. The back may have shading in a lighter shade of color, or with various markings of white color patches.
VAN
ONLY the top of the face, ears, and tail and sometimes a few spots on the body show darker markings.
LYNX POINT (also called tabby point)
One of my personal favorites. Check out our chocolate lynx bicolor, new queen Katie Simone. A Lynx Point kitty literally has striping. Tabby markings on the face in what looks like the letter "W". Tabby markings are also overlaid on the other color points including the legs, back and tail.
TORTIE POINT
Tortie points will have red or cream, seal, or blues. Torties are always female and must have three colors, one of which is always orange.
TORBIE POINT
A mix of both Lynx and Tortie. Red or cream mixed color AND Tabby Markings on the points.
A ragdoll will reach full coat color at around 2 years old and will be considered fully grown at 4 years old.
